Every year the Arabian Business Awards are held at the Ritz-Carlton, Dubai International Financial Centre to commemorate the work that major Arabian companies have done not only in real estate, but also in finance and technology.
Among the 22 awards that were presented, the title of “Real Estate Legend” went to DAMAC owner Hussain Sajwani recognizing over 30 years in successful business management and progressive thinking. That award has been well-deserved by Sajwani who has been partially responsible for Dubai becoming the magnificent city in the UAE that it is today.
Prior to becoming DAMAC owner, Hussain Sajwani was involved with oil drilling contracts at ADNOC and ran Dariah Management Services, a catering and food service venture. He mentions that he learned a lot about making business deals at his father’s merchant shop growing up, and that inspired him to achieve far greater things than what most of his peers did at the time. Sajwani was one of the first UAE nationals to get an education at a high-ranking American university, which in his case was the University of Washington. His time in the US seeing the city of Seattle standing was part of what influenced him to become a real estate tycoon.
Hussain Sajwani merged his catering business into a hotel joint venture in 1996 when he bought three hotels in Deira. He later integrated it into DAMAC Properties after the company was founded in 2002. The first property DAMAC Properties opened was Marina Terrace, a seaside based housing project that began in 2003 and was completed in 2006.
He would then proceed to build properties like Park Towers in DIFC, Executive Heights, Al Jawrah Tower and then construction of the glamorous DAMAC Tower with interiors by Versace which was started in 2008 and completed in 2010.
Often discussed is the Hussain Sajwani family and their connection with President Trump and his family. Hussain Sajwani has built many properties with the current US president and continues to work with the Trump Organization as an ongoing business partnership, and he has frequently brought his family to visit the Trump family at Trump Tower in New York and his Mar a Lago resort in Miami.
The two main properties that Sajwani has built with Trump’s name on them include the Trump Estates that are part of his DAMAC Hills establishment, and the Trump International Golf Club which opened in 2017.
The Trump International Golf Club’s course was specially designed by Tiger Woods. Sajwani has also given to various foundations including the UAE’s Red Crescent group, and also the Dubai Future Foundation and its One Million Arab Coders Initiative.
